The Indian telecom sector is witnessing a shift in prepaid recharge offerings, as major players Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have introduced new voice and SMS-only plans while revising their pricing strategies. These changes follow consumer demand for affordable options and regulatory scrutiny by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The Need for Voice and SMS-Only Plans

Telecom providers in India have traditionally bundled data services with their recharge plans, forcing customers who primarily rely on voice calls and SMS to pay for data they may not require. In response to growing consumer complaints, particularly from elderly users and rural populations, TRAI issued guidelines mandating standalone voice and SMS recharge options. Consequently, Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone-Idea (Vi) launched revised plans to cater to this segment.

TRAI has taken note of recent launches and revisions, stating, “It has come to notice of TRAI that recently few service providers have launched voice and SMS-only packs which will be reported to TRAI within seven working days from the date of launch. The recently launched vouchers will be examined by TRAI as per extant regulatory provisions.”

Jio’s Voice and SMS-Only Plans

Jio’s Rs 1,748 Recharge Plan

Reliance Jio has revised its earlier Rs 1,958 plan to Rs 1,748. The new plan offers:

  • Validity: 336 days (29 days less than the previous plan)
  • Benefits: Unlimited voice calls and 3,600 SMS
  • Additional Perks: Access to Jio apps such as JioTV, JioCinema (non-premium), and JioCloud
  • Effective Cost: Rs 5.20 per day

This move aims to provide a long-term yet cost-effective solution, though critics argue the reduced validity lessens the impact of the price cut.

Jio’s Rs 448 Recharge Plan

Another major revision is the reduction of the Rs 458 plan to Rs 448, offering:

  • Validity: 84 days
  • Benefits: Unlimited voice calls and 1,000 SMS
  • Additional Perks: JioTV, JioCinema (non-premium), and JioCloud
  • Effective Cost: Rs 5 per day

Despite the price reduction, no changes have been made to the benefits, maintaining its appeal to short-term users.

Jio Republic Day Offer 2025

Jio’s seasonal marketing strategy includes the Republic Day Offer, which provides a 100% value-back deal on the Rs 3,599 annual plan. The benefits include:

  • Voice & SMS: Unlimited calls and 100 SMS per day
  • Data: 2.5GB per day, with unlimited usage at 64 kbps post-consumption
  • Additional Perks: Unlimited 5G benefits and Jio apps
  • Partner Discounts: Discounts on AJIO, EaseMyTrip, Tira, and Swiggy

Airtel’s Voice and SMS-Only Plans

Airtel’s Rs 1,849 Recharge Plan

Airtel’s revised annual plan, previously priced at Rs 1,959, now costs Rs 1,849, offering:

  • Validity: 365 days
  • Benefits: Unlimited voice calls and 3,600 SMS
  • Additional Perks: Airtel Rewards, including Apollo 24/7 Circle membership and free Hello Tune service
  • Effective Cost: Rs 5.06 per day

Unlike Jio, Airtel has not reduced the plan’s validity, making it a more stable long-term offering.

Airtel’s Rs 469 Recharge Plan

Previously priced at Rs 499, this plan now costs Rs 469 and includes:

  • Validity: 84 days
  • Benefits: Unlimited voice calls and 900 SMS
  • Additional Perks: Apollo 24/7 Circle membership and free Hello Tune service
  • Effective Cost: Rs 5.58 per day

This revised plan provides a lower upfront cost while retaining the same features.

Vodafone-Idea (Vi) Offerings

Vi offers a single voice and SMS-only plan:

  • Price: Rs 1,460
  • Validity: 270 days
  • Benefits: Unlimited calls and 100 SMS
  • Additional Charges: Rs 1 for local and Rs 1.5 for STD messages beyond the limit

Vi’s plan presents a budget-friendly alternative but with a shorter validity compared to Jio and Airtel.

Comparison Overview

Provider Plan Price Validity SMS Perks Effective Cost/Day
Jio Rs 1,748 336 days 3600 JioTV, JioCinema, JioCloud Rs 5.20
Airtel Rs 1,849 365 days 3600 Apollo 24/7, Hello Tunes Rs 5.06
Jio Rs 448 84 days 1000 JioTV, JioCinema, JioCloud Rs 5.00
Airtel Rs 469 84 days 900 Apollo 24/7, Hello Tunes Rs 5.58
Vi Rs 1,460 270 days 100 None Rs 5.41

While Jio’s plans appear more cost-effective, Airtel’s offerings come with added benefits like Apollo 24/7 and Hello Tunes. The choice between the two providers largely depends on individual preferences, such as validity needs, additional benefits, and existing ecosystem loyalty.

As TRAI continues its scrutiny, further changes in pricing and offerings may emerge, ensuring consumers have better access to affordable, voice-focused prepaid plans.
